***Please be vigilant with your money.***
The Farmington Police Department has received several calls from residents about phone scams. In most cases the callers have heavy accents, can’t pronounce your name, and are calling about people owing back taxes, or warrants from the courts. Most of the caller id’s are showing a 202 area code. In one instance the number was a local number. There are apps out there that can mask the original callers phone number, and portray a different number. There was even a fake web address to try and make things look real.
The callers state if you don’t go to the store and purchase credit cards to pay them they will have you arrested, or freeze your assets. **Please do not send or wire these scammers any money.** Don’t provide them any personal information.
Remember fines are paid at Courts, the IRS already knows your SS number, and has other means, none of which involve you calling in a credit card number to them,– that I am aware of. If you have any questions or concerns please call your local Police Department, Federal agency, or Court, and we will be happy to assist you.
Some of these callers can be very rude, and persistent, but don’t fall victim to them. It is nearly impossible to find them, as most are out of the county, and get your money back.
The old employment scams seem to be slowing, but are still around. (If you agree to mail packages for me, or whatever, I’ll send you a check for $1,000.00. You keep $300.00, and send the rest back to me. (After you do this their business check bounces, is forged, bank doesn’t exist, (I could go on), and your out all the money plus bank fees. ) **Always remember “if it sounds to good to be true to probably is.”
